AUSTIN, Texas — It may be fall but the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department is already thinking about next summer.
The Aquatic Division is looking to train and hire more than 700 lifeguards for 45 public aquatic facilities. The division has seven regional pools, three community pools, 22 neighborhood pools, one wading pool, 11 splash pads and Barton Springs Pool. Those who are interested must be at least 15 years old.
Applicants who are hired as a lifeguard will get free training, a free uniform, a $400 lifeguard training stipend, a free CapMetro pass and a minimum wage of $20 an hour.
According to the City of Austin, if you are over the age of 16, you can work at one of the City's year-round pools or get trained during the fall or winter. Those who are 15 will have to wait until summer break for AISD.
Training sessions for first-time lifeguard certification can be found here. The City also has a schedule for those who are renewing their lifeguard certification, which can be found here.
After getting hired and trained as a lifeguard, those candidates will then have to attend their first in-service training at the closest pool.
Some locals who have become lifeguards have used their skillset to get careers in public service or a job as a first responder, while others have worked as lifeguards until they have retired.
Those who are interested can apply here.
