BookPeople celebrates 50 years of 'community bound by books'

Like most Austin businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the independent bookstore to get creative this year.

AUSTIN, Texas — What a year to celebrate a milestone. On Nov. 11, Austin independent bookstore BookPeople announced on Twitter it was celebrating its 50th birthday.

The store thanked its patrons for keeping them in business "especially these last nine months as we've faced challenges like never before." BookPeople also said its staff is continuing to work hard and get creative to continue to grow "as your local community bookstore."

"Today we’re taking a moment and thinking back to all the parking lot midnight release parties and author signings, bookmark contests and petting zoo storytimes," BookPeople wrote on Twitter.

The store also reminded its followers to support local bookstores and do any holiday shopping early. The store also had a frank message for anyone who hopes to shop there for years to come: "If you want us here next year, shop with us this year!"

BookPeople, located at the corner of Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard, opened in 1970. According to its Twitter page and website, it is the largest independent bookstore in Texas and has been voted the best bookstore in Austin for more than 20 years.
