'Over the moon ecstatic' | Longtime Austin karaoke bar Ego's will remain open

The popular South Congress bar previously announced it could be forced to close by the end of August. Now, thanks to fixed plumbing, it will stay open.

AUSTIN, Texas — The music won't stop at Ego's after all.

Earlier this month, the popular, decades-old karaoke bar in Downtown Austin announced that it might be forced to close by the end of August due to collapsing pipes. The bar said in social media posts that things were "not looking good since they plan on demoing the building at some point anyway."

Hidden behind a gas station, Ego's first opened back in 1979. Since then, it has become a central spot for karaoke among Austinites and tourists alike. Now the bar says it's the only business left inside its building at 510 S. Congress Ave.

In its initial posts about the possible closure, Ego's said it hoped it would be able to reopen in the same area someday.

Now it doesn't have to move at all.

"We are completely over the moon ecstatic to announce that the plumbing has been fixed and we passed the inspection, so we are officially able to STAY OPEN!!!" Ego's said in a social media post on Aug. 27. "A HUGE THANK YOU to our landlord and the amazing plumbers who rallied to help us keep our doors open.

The bar said it would also like to thank everyone who came out to show their support during this "tumultuous time," ending its post with a triumphant, "WE'RE BACK BABY!!!"
