SAN ANTONIO — Elon Musk's The Boring Company is reportedly in talks with the City of San Antonio to build a tunnel connecting downtown to the city's airport.
The city's transportation planning agency has agreed to negotiate with the Central Texas-based company to potentially construct a loop of tunnels between San Antonio International Airport and downtown, according to a release.
The release states that the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority's board members voted to conduct a study into the feasibility of such a project.
That proposal reportedly calls for building a tunnel 30 feet below ground that would use Tesla vehicles to carry passengers between the two locations, according to a report by KVUE's news partners at the Austin American-Statesman. It's estimated to cost between $247 million and $289 million, just for the airport-to-downtown portion of the loop. Reports state the system could potentially include additional legs.
The report states that The Boring Company would plan to begin construction in 12 months, complete the first phase in 18 months, and wrap up the whole project in three years. The company would also operate and maintain the loop under a lease agreement.
