Keep Austin Local: Austin Kung Fu

It’s never too late to learn Kung Fu or Tai Chi!

AUSTIN, Texas — Central Texans have seen many businesses shutting down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. KVUE wants to help "Keep Austin Local" by highlighting small businesses that might need a little help.

KVUE stopped by Austin Kung Fu on Friday to learn about its history and what it offers.

Austin Kung Fu is in its 30th year and is owned by Joe and Sheryl Schaefer. Joe is an eighth-degree black belt, and Sheryl is a sixth-degree black belt. The two moved to Austin in 1991 for University of Texas graduate school and opened up a small Kung Fu school that year.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, they closed down their school and converted their master bedroom at home into a studio so they could teach virtually from home. They taught more than 25 classes each week online for kids, adults and seniors. They also had many of their blackbelt adult students teach from their homes, living rooms and garages.

Austin Kung Fu has now reopened its doors to small, in-person, socially distanced classes, and is still offering virtual classes.

The owners say Kung Fu and Tai Chi impact every part of your life, and that it “makes life better.” They say you can learn martial arts at any age.

Austin Kung Fu is located at 8910 Research Blvd. Suite E1 in Austin, or online here
