AUSTIN, Texas — A national retail chain is shutting hundreds of stores across the U.S., including one in Central Texas.
Last week, Ohio-based company Big Lots filed for bankruptcy, with plans to close 344 locations throughout the country.
In Texas, a total of 16 spots are closing their doors for good, including the storefront in Austin on 2506 West Parmer Lane.
The company still has two other Austin locations – one on Spicewood Springs Road and another on East William Cannon Drive – that were not included on the national shutdown list.
Other Texas storefronts set to close include one in Dallas, one in San Antonio and two in Houston, to name a few.
In total, Big Lots has 1,388 stores in the U.S., with the highest amount (116) located in Texas. As for the closures, Texas has the third-most with 16, but California is No. 1 with 75.
The chain currently serves customers in 48 states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, with the closures planned for 41 states total.
Other states on the shutdown list include Florida with 28 closures, Arizona with 22 and Washington state with 18. Meanwhile, states like Wyoming and South Dakota are only shutting down one store each.
Big Lots has started the auctioning process for more than 290 of its storefronts in 37 states, not including Texas. The company intends to sell the rest of its operations to Nexus Capital Management, a California-based investment firm.
