As Austin continues to face a housing shortage, some relief could be found a little further south.
According to a report by the Austin Business Journal, about 6,000 new residential units are currently in the works by SouthStar Communities.
Along with the new homes come 300 acres of public parks, five miles of trails, four new schools in Comal ISD, and more than 200 acres of commercial space. It will all be located off of Interstate 35 just north of New Braunfels, about 45 minutes south of Austin.
The ABJ reports that around 123 acres of the residential property will be for mixed-use and construction will take place over 15 years, with groundbreaking expected within the year. The first homes should be ready by 2023.
According to the ABJ, the New Braunfels City Council approved a development agreement with SouthStar in June for the project. The community will sit in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, just north of New Braunfels city limits. This agreement will give the City of New Braunfels regulation over the property for permitting, land use, parks and utilities.
