Austin's airport wins award for new, existing flight routes in 2019

The award is because of the airport's ability to attract new flight routes and maintain existing ones.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has another award to tout.

It won the "four to 20 million passenger" category of the Routes Americas Awards, which “are highly regarded in the aviation industry” for “marketing services that support new and existing air services.”

Last year was the busiest year on record for the airport, serving 17.3 million flyers. The airport added 24 new routes last year, including WestJet’s flight to Calgary and a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt.

In 2020, airlines are expected to launch nonstop service to Paris and Amsterdam from Austin.

In November, the Austin airport placed second on the Wall Street Journal’s best midsize airports of 2019.

Austin's airport boasts an on-time arrival percentage of 80% and a flight cancellation rate of only 0.76%, according to the WSJ. It also reported that the average time it takes to get through security is only five minutes and 18 seconds.
