In December 2022,  KVUE's Defender Erica Proffer reported on Austin city leaders talking about stopping unlicensed short-term rentals from operating.

According to Austin code, there are three types of short-term rentals. Type 1 is owner-occupied single-family, multifamily or duplex. Type 2 is not owner-occupied and is a single-family home or duplex. Type 3 is for multifamily housing with either owner-occupied or not owner-occupied status.

The council asked the city manager to evaluate other cities' ordinances and create an amendment that will be voted on by the council. This was supposed to be presented to the council by March 23.
