Construction begins on Spicewood Springs Road expansion

The project will add two additional lanes to the road between SH 360 and Mesa Drive.

AUSTIN, Texas — A bond project to add additional lanes to Spicewood Springs Road began on Friday.

The City of Austin officially broke ground on the Spicewood Springs Mobility Project, which will ultimately widen the road from two lanes to four lanes in the nearly fifth of a mile stretch between Loop 360 and Mesa Drive.

The expansion project will also add medians and sidewalk lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians.

"Between 2012 and 2017, 47% of vehicle collisions along this stretch resulted in an injury. I am very pleased that the new improvements will not only create a safer and more efficient road but will do so preserving green space," Councilmember Alison Alter (District 10) said at Friday's groundbreaking ceremony. "With the new shared paths that will be on both sides of the road, this project will increase the mobility options for the area and truly serve Austin's many families and workers as they make their way through our community."

The $31 million project is funded through the 2016 mobility bond and is expected to be completed by December 2026.

Residents of the area will have a chance to view and discuss the project at a "Meet the Contractor" event hosted by Capital Delivery Services and Transportation and Public Works on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, located at 8134 Mesa Drive.
