AUSTIN, Texas — Central Health will build a new medical complex in northeast Austin after gaining permission from the Travis County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.
In a 3-1 vote, the court okayed Central Health’s plan to issue approximately $100 million in debt to buy and renovate existing office space in the area.
The plan is to convert the office space into a medical space that will serve low income residents and people experiencing homelessness. The location of the property will be announced once the purchase has been finalized.
On March 29, Central Health's Board of Managers voted to authorize spending approximately $90.5 million in certificates of obligation (CO) to purchase the property and approximately $9 million in CO funding for the renovation of the Rosewood-Zaragosa specialty care clinic in East Austin, which is scheduled to open later this year.
“Real estate opportunities, especially in the Austin market, arise quickly and are rarely aligned with the timing of our annual budget development,” President and CEO Mike Geeslin said. "We must act quickly when we identify a perfect location at a fair price that will provide access to a range of services to our patients. This medical complex is located where the people we serve live, so they can get the care they need and deserve.”
The new center is tentatively expected to open in 2025.
