Central Texas becoming a hot spot for data centers

Austin continues to flout its prowess as a tech hub, as the area continues to see data centers popping up.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin is a hub for tech, which is why data centers are now popping up all around Central Texas.

"A lot of the companies, I think, are coming to Austin mainly because we have a good talent base of engineers and technical people that have been working in the server industry and take advantage of that talent, and also [to take advantage of] available power and infrastructure we have in Austin," said Tommy Minyard, the director of advanced computing systems at Texas Advanced Computing Center.

These data centers contain hundreds of servers and can employ hundreds of people.

Data centers are used for storing all types of data servers for companies of all sizes.

"Typically for their data, their own in-house processing, they are running simulations on it, financial analysis," Minyard said.

As more of these data centers pop up in Central Texas, they're bringing a large economic boost to the area.

"The data centers here in Austin actually serve a wide variety of customers. You could have anyone from cloud providers such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft," Minyard said.

Minyard said even more data centers are on the way.

In Hutto, there are plans for several new data centers as part of a "Megasite" plan. Minyard said there are also plans to bring two more data centers to the Round Rock area soon.
