New effort underway to fill empty storefronts in Downtown Austin

The effort, called the "Downtown Austin Space Activation," is designed to connect small businesses with available spaces.

AUSTIN, Texas — The nonprofit Downtown Austin Alliance is initiating a new strategy in an attempt to fill empty storefronts in Downtown Austin.

The alliance is launching the "Downtown Austin Space Activation Program." The goal of the new program is to connect small businesses with available spaces scattered throughout the downtown area.

The program could potentially open the doors for pop-up retail businesses, as well as food and beverage businesses, art installations, co-working spaces and private events.

Leaders with the Downtown Austin Alliance said that vacant storefronts can serve as a deterrent for people coming to downtown. The group hopes the implementation of this program could change that.
