AUSTIN, Texas — Builders in the Austin area are using all kinds of tactics to attract buyers – including printing houses.
ICON, an Austin-based construction technology company, has partnered with 3Strands, a Kansas City developer, to bring 3D-printed homes to East Austin.
According to ICON, the energy-efficient homes use a material that is designed to last longer than traditional building materials and withstand fires, floods and other natural disasters.
The East 17th Street Residences development consists of four homes, two of which sold within days of their listing in March. ICON said all four homes feature covered front porches, covered parking, open-concept floor plans, large north-facing windows and a minimalist architecture aesthetic.
The "Treehouse Residence," a two-story, 1,928-square-foot home, is the largest in the development. It has four bedrooms and four baths and is listed at $795,000. The "Skyview Residence" is a two-story, four-bedroom, three-bath home that measures 1,521 square feet and is listed at $745,000. Learn more.
These homes on 17th Street are new, but ICON's technology has already been used to make more affordable housing options in Austin. The company helped bring several 3D-printed homes to Community First! Village in East Austin, a master-planned community that helps people experiencing homelessness get off the streets by providing housing and helping them get jobs.
The homes provide a cost-effective, sustainable solution to housing.
"I've never lived in a place this unique, innovative. Plus, it's everything that goes with it," said Tim, one of the first people to move into the homes.
The homes were printed three at a time from proprietary concrete using custom machinery that's faster and more efficient than traditional construction.
