AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Elgin has unveiled a new wastewater treatment plant that will expand the plant's capacity as the city continues to grow.
Leaders formally dedicated the new plant, located at 720 W. Cleveland St., at a ceremony Saturday. The dedication was done in the memory Doug Prinz, an Elgin native who worked in the city's water department for 25 years before dying of cancer in 2020.
The $17.6 million expansion of the plant will double capacity, allowing an intake of two million gallons daily. Tom Mattis, Elgin's city manager, said he believes the plant will provide the necessary capacity over the next 10 years as Elgin continues to grow.
“Considering the service area meant to discharge to the plant, this expansion should provide all the wastewater treatment capacity we’ll need for the next 8-10 years, even with continuing rapid growth," Mattis said.
The city said the new plant includes increased capacity in the aeration basins, an additional clarifier, an aerobic digestor to assist in sludge disposal, a new belt press and accompanying building, a pipe rack storage facility, an additional filtration system to assist in filtering the effluent, a new generator, upgrades to the existing lift station, in addition to new fencing, gate and other improvements.
