AUSTIN, Texas — Classic North Austin bowling alley Highland Lanes, which was set to shut its doors by the end of the year, has been given a lease extension, according to a report from the Austin Business Journal (ABJ).

The owners of the Burnet Road business, which has operated for nearly 50 years, told the ABJ it will remain open for another 18 months.

“We’ve got an extension on our lease, and so we’re going to be there for at least another year-and-a-half, so we’re just going to enjoy that for now,” co-owner John Donovan said.

There are currently plans to convert the bowling alley into a new 300-unit multifamily development, which will also feature 36 units reserved for affordable housing. The development will also feature 4,000 square feet of commercial use space.

The site plan for the development was filed earlier this year but is now inactive, the ABJ said.

Donovan told the ABJ it’s possible the lease extension was granted because the developer needed more time. He was unsure if Highland Lanes would be able to move to a new location thanks to affordability issues in Austin.
