The Kyle City Council has approved a professional services agreement with Elon Musk's The Boring Company. The agreement is for the construction of a railroad pedestrian tunnel that will be part of Kyle's trail system, The Vybe.
The tunnel was initially planned as a bridge, but the Texas Department of Transportation deemed it unsafe.
Kyle City Manager Scott Sellers reportedly said the professional services agreement starts the actual permitting with the Union Pacific Corp. railroad. The report states that part of the work that will be done by The Boring Co. is a geotechnical investigation to analyze the soil and foundation of the proposed tunnel area.
The project is estimated at $3 million, which will be paid for by Central SouthWest Texas Development, the developers of the Kyle Crossing Phase 2 development.
The report states that the tunnel will be 12 feet in diameter, but the path will only be 10 feet wide. The tunnel will also be lit and will have cameras that will most likely be monitored by the Kyle Police Department.
Sellers said that once construction begins, it should take a couple of months to complete.
An agreement with Union Pacific Corp. is on the agenda for the Kyle City Council's meeting on May 17.
