KYLE, Texas — The city of Kyle of is one of the fastest growing cities in country.
“We have gone from 30,000 to over 60,000 residents [within the past decade]," Mayor Travis Mitchell said.
To keep up with the growth, the city is putting in more roads. The construction project is part of a nearly $300 million road bond project.
Tuesday was a groundbreaking on the extension of Marketplace Avenue. It is one of several road projects that will get underway in Kyle.
“It's the first groundbreaking project of the 2022 road bonds, which is 13 total segments," Mitchell said. "We are in the first phase. Next year, [we] will break ground on three more projects and the year after, seven more projects."
The extension of Marketplace Avenue is an $11.4 million project that will be just over a half-mile long. It runs near Kohlers Crossing to FM 1626.
Police Chief Jeff Barnett said this will be a critical stretch for first responders that includes having a straight shot to Interstate 35.
"Our public safety building is located 300 yards due south of me. This will be a critical pathway for police responders to get into some the most congested business areas of our community so we can provide emergency services," Barnett said.
Residents like Kelly Riggs are excited about the projects.
"We definitely need to get places quicker because it’s backed up everywhere," Riggs said.
The Marketplace Avenue extension will be completed within six months.
