Libraries in the Lake Travis-Westlake region are planning for how they will meet residents' needs as the area continues to grow.
According to a report from Community Impact, all Lake Travis-Westlake library districts are reportedly either developing new library facilities or planning additions or upgrades to existing facilities.
Several library directors told Community Impact that as each facility is either built or upgraded, much of the focus will be on modernizing to meet community needs.
Right now, the area has four library districts: Bee Cave, Lake Travis Community, Spicewood and Westbank libraries. Each district is "anticipating significant changes over the next few years," according to the report.
The Lake Travis Community Library currently has one location off Lohmans Crossing Road in Lakeway, but by late this year or early 2024, the district hopes to add another library off of Highway 71 in Spicewood. That library will be called Lake Travis Community Library West.
Meanwhile, Bee Cave Library officials are reportedly designing a 24,000-square-foot, 3-story library with modern amenities. When the new facility is completed – tentatively set for 2025 – the Bee Cave Library will move from the City Hall building to a to-be-determined location.
Elsewhere in Lake Travis-Westlake, the Laura Bush Community Library off Bee Caves Road is undergoing a $2.3 million renovation. The library is part of the Westbank Community Library District, which serves Westlake, Steiner Ranch and West Austin.
And the Spicewood Community Library, which serves western Travis and Burnet counties, is in the preliminary stages of building a new 3,000-square foot library for $1.5 to $2 million.
