More affordable senior housing coming to Manor

Manor Town II is expected to be ready to open in summer of 2024. It will begin pre-leasing in January.

MANOR, Texas — The Housing Authority of Travis County (HATC) is getting ready to add more housing for seniors off Carrie Manor Street in Manor.

Eighteen of the 20 units at Manor Town II will be for people making 30% of the area's median income. That’s about an annual income of $23,000 for one person, and $26,500 for two people.

Rent for the new apartments will start at around $580 and go up, depending on income.

Manor Town II is expected to be ready to open in summer of 2024. It will begin pre-leasing in January.

"Affordable housing is quite the need in the area, so for the opportunity to develop affordable housing, particularly for seniors, is critical," said Patrick Howard, executive director of the HATC.

The new apartments will be located next to the Manor Town Apartments, which opened in 2004. They are also owned by the HATC.

Eighty-four-year-old Jean Jones, a retired nurse assistant who grew up in Austin, is a current resident at Manor Town Apartments. She has been living there since the complex opened.

She said with the lower costs compared to other housing in Central Texas, she has been able to live comfortably.

"I try to stay in my means and, so far, I am good for where I am," Jones said.

She is glad more affordable apartments are on the way next door to her apartments.

"We really need some," she said.

Manor Town II will be 20 units and will include a community room.

"Having a positive effect on a pretty large problem in the community," Howard said.

Jones said she would like to move to Manor Town II when it opens.

"Hopefully, I am will be able to get one of them," Jones said.
