Partnership helping South Austin housing complex expand

When the project is complete, there will be 600 units.

AUSTIN, Texas — A South Austin housing complex is getting a major facelift.

Off South Lamar Boulevard, just outside of Downtown Austin, the Mary Lee Foundation’s Lamar Square has been operating for more than 50 years. Now, it's getting redeveloped.

The Mary Lee Foundation is partnering with Foundation Communities, which will run the housing side of the things.

“They have a whole lot more expertise on running multiple dwellings and handling that situation,” Don Jones, a Mary Lee Foundation board member, said.

Foundation Communities has built more than 25 properties in Austin, with the goal of bringing more affordable housing to the city.

"It’s time now to redevelop this property, and we are partnering at Foundation Communities with Mary Lee, to create a new vision – a new campus for about 600 residents," Walter Moreau, executive director of Foundation Communities said.

As part of the new vision, Moreau said two vacant buildings have been demolished.

"Our vision over time, we are going to be build three buildings here that will be home for hundreds more residents," Moreau said.

Moreau said units will be income-based. He said the project will be done in three phases, with the first building expected to break ground within a year.
