AUSTIN, Texas — Companies expanding or relocating to Austin pledged to create 20,840 jobs from January through September of 2021, according to data from the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Over 150 companies contributed to the growth. According to a report from the Austin Business Journal, the total is nearly equal to the record number of jobs pledged in 2020.
In 2020, 22,114 jobs were pledged by new or expanding companies in Austin, according to the ABJ’s report.
The company pledging the highest number of jobs this year is Tesla. The company, which is considered “Expanded” in the data, created 5,000 new jobs in Austin.
Of the companies adding jobs, over 70 are new to the area. Also, roughly 50 companies announced their additions in June, July and August, according to the ABJ's report. Over the summer, 5,500 jobs were pledged.
Last week, Tesla’s CEO and Founder Elon Musk announced the company is moving its headquarters from the Bay Area in California to Austin. According to the ABJ, almost 30 California companies are relocating to Austin in 2021.
The other tops companies included Amazon, which pledged 2,000 jobs at its new San Marcos Fulfillment Center. Quota Path in Austin added 1,540 jobs, and Firefly Aerospace added 682 in Cedar Park, according to the data.
