Ribbon-cutting held for roads near Samsung plant in Taylor

County leaders say with all the extra traffic the semiconductor plant will bring to the area, expanding roads is necessary.

TAYLOR, Texas — On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott joined Williamson County leaders to celebrate progress on making way for Samsung's new multi-billion-dollar facility.

A ribbon-cutting was held to celebrate the completion of part of Samsung Highway and other roads near the company's new semiconductor plant in Taylor, near Taylor High School.

County leaders say with all the extra traffic the plant will bring to the area, expanding roads is necessary.

"I mean, we're opening a road project that's only been under construction for a couple of years, but it's really the pathway to the largest semiconductor manufacturing complex in America," County Judge Bill Gravell said. "My dreams and my hopes is that we're building the largest semiconductor manufacturing manufacturing complex in the world."

Initially, Samsung leaders said the plant would be a $17 billion facility. But the South Korea-based company is more than doubling its investment to $44 billion because of federal funds from the CHIPS Act.

Manufacturing at the Taylor plant is expected to begin later this year.
