ROUND ROCK, Texas — A Houston-based developer is planning a new 57-acre development in Round Rock that could include a data center.
It would be built near Chisholm Parkway and Interstate 35 and would likely feature a data center alongside an electric substation and other commercial buildings.
According to the Austin Business Journal, the substation would be necessary to provide adequate power for the data center. Representatives told the ABJ they have had conversations with Oncor Electric Delivery Co. to make sure they have adequate infrastructure to support the site.
While data centers add value to local tax rolls, they have also drawn scrutiny in the past due to power consumption. Other facilities like this one are already popping up in nearby cities like Georgetown, Hutto, Taylor and Pflugerville.
The developer, Highland Resources Incorporated, got a recommendation from the city's planning and zoning commission to create the development last Wednesday.
Highland Resources has an office in Austin and has been behind several projects in the city, including the Driskill Hotel and mixed-use developments in North Austin.
The project now heads to the Round Rock City Council for final approval.
