Tesla eyes possible old H-E-B building, filing shows

The automobile and energy company submitted a filing to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for 7010 W. State Highway 71.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is looking to expand its footprint in Austin.

The automobile and energy company submitted a filing to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at 7010 W. State Highway 71 for a 64,771-square-foot building. The filing stated the project is calling for an "interior buildout for Telsa," which will cost roughly $6.7 million.

According to Google Maps, an H-E-B was once located at the spot off SH 71. The current owner of the property is Kimco Realty, which is a real estate investment that works with shopping centers.

According to a report from the Austin Business Journal (ABJ), the H-E-B that was located there fits the size of the facility the filing talks about, even though there isn't an exact address listed. The ABJ also said the next building that could fit the square footage is a Petco.

The ABJ reached out to Tesla and Kimco Realty, but neither commented on the filing.

Tesla has quite a footprint in Austin already with several dealership locations around the city, including at The Domain, in South Austin and off of Research Boulevard near McNeil Drive in northwest Austin. Telsa also has its gigafactory, which is located near Interstate 130.
