AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is again expanding its presence in the Austin area, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) architectural barriers project page.
The page states the electric car maker is working on a $2.5 million renovated "auto sales and vehicle service center" at 500 E. St. Elmo Road in South Austin, where Music Lab Austin is located. The facility will be about 30,000 square feet.
The TDLR page states that crews will be enlarging the storefront windows, installing new charging equipment, upgrading the building's power, adding new lights and additional, unspecified interior build-out. Work is set to begin in June, with a September completion date.
The facility is set to become the company's first service center in Austin south of downtown.
The news follows several recent headlines regarding the company's dealings in Texas. In July, Tesla announced it would be building its newest Gigafactory in Travis County. In December, Elon Musk, who recently become the world's richest man, announced he too would be moving to Texas.
