AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin is tentatively allowing tiny homes and RVs to be used as accessory dwellings in single-family neighborhoods.
On Thursday, members of the Austin City Council discussed the matter, addressing worries from a number of critics who believe the move would allow for more short-term rentals in Austin. Supporters of the move say it would help with housing density and potentially alleviate Austin's housing crisis.
The council added language that would require homeowners to register homes if they're being used as short-term rentals.
"With these new changes and the friendly collaboration with Councilmember [Leslie] Poole, we've ensured that there will be transparency throughout the process and there are assurances for single family homeowners," Councilmember Mackenzie Kelly (District 6) said at Thursday's council meeting.
The new language now means that Interim City Manager Jesús Garza will have to draft the appropriate code changes in order for the move to occur. Those changes must be written by Nov. 30.
