TxDOT reveals possible I-35 Capital Express Central Project renderings

The new renderings show some of the possibilities for unique lighting, railing and greenery along the interstate.

AUSTIN, Texas — We now have a little better idea about what the future of Intestate 35 in Austin could look like.

At an "I-35 Capital Express Central Aesthetics Meeting" on April 11, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) released new renderings of some of the possibilities, including unique lighting, railing and greenery.

The potential options would be part of the Capital Express Central Project, which would overhaul miles of I-35 in Austin, between State Highway 45 north and State Highway 45 southeast.

The $4.5 billion plan would remove upper decks, widen east-west cross-street bridges, improve pedestrian and bike paths and lower I-35 main lanes between Airport Boulevard and Lady Bird Lake, and Riverside Drive and Oltorf Street.

The expansion project has faced some backlash. Some community members, including the grassroots movement Rethink 35, have criticized the potential displacement the expansion project could cause.

Elsewhere in Austin, TxDOT recently broke ground on its I-35 Capital Express North Project.
