AUSTIN, Texas — Whole Foods is continuing to grow in Downtown Austin.
The company broke ground on a five-story expansion to its corporate headquarters on West Fifth and Bowie streets, directly behind its existing flagship store.
A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing describes the building as a $38 million project, with nearly 144,000 square feet.
KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman report a building that size could accommodate as many as 600 employees when the project is complete in late 2021. It has been dubbed Shoal Creek Walk 2.
“[The new building] is an exciting addition for Whole Foods Market and Austin,” the company told The Statesman. “We navigated extremely challenging site constraints, such as flood plain and Capital View Corridor restrictions, to arrive at a beautiful design that adds value for the community and our team members. We are excited to deliver this project in late 2021.”
Austin’s Endeavor Real Estate Group is reportedly behind the project’s development, while Gensler is the architect and DPR is the general contractor.
Whole Foods began as a small Austin natural foods store in 1980. Now a multinational supermarket chain, it was acquired by Amazon in 2017.
The company has been planning a corporate campus in Downtown Austin for years. According to The Statesman, a seven-level parking garage west of Shoal Creek and facing West Sixth Street will be built to accommodate the new facility.
