AUSTIN, Texas — A transportation and logistics company is laying off more than 800 employees in March, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN).
Ryder Inc., based in Miami, Florida, is set to lay off a total of 801 employees in the Travis County area. According to the Texas Workforce Commission and WARN, the notice to WARN was filed on Jan. 11 and the official layoff date is set for March 18.
WARN is a list provided by the Texas Workforce Commission of all companies that have reported future or already occurring layoffs within the company.
The filing does not state what job positions the employees hold, just the number of employees being laid off, the city and the area where the employees are located.
When reached for comment Tuesday, a spokesperson for Ryder provided the following statement:
"Due to a customer’s changing business needs, Ryder will no longer operate the customer facilities located in the Austin, Texas, area, effective March 31, 2023. We understand the customer is insourcing a significant portion of the operations and transitioning a portion to two third-party logistics providers. Ryder employees at these facilities are encouraged to consider any open positions at other Ryder facilities in the area or to apply for positions with the customer or the new service providers."
Ryder later clarified that between its three business units, Ryder has 50,000 customers, manages 330 warehouses and nearly 250,000 commercial vehicles for customers. Employees are encouraged to apply with the customer or new service provider if they'd like to stay in Austin.
In addition to Ryder, RateGenius Loan Services will also be laying off 139 employees in the Travis County area.
