GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter expanded in March of 2019 to house and care for even more animals. Today, there are hundreds of dogs, cats and other domesticated animals in the shelter. Caring for those animals is a big job.
Misty Valenta is the community programs coordinator at the shelter.
"We start each morning with cleaning and feeding and making sure everyone is taken care of and ready for either adoption or a reunion," Valenta explained.
Cleaning the kennels for the bigger dogs is a big job. They begin with a hydrogen peroxide solution, which is safe for the animals.
Next, each kennel is scrubbed by hand to make sure the tile walls and windows are all clean. Finally, the kennels are power washed to make sure they are ready for the animals to return.
This facility also has a number of outside areas for the animals to get out and enjoy some fresh air.
"Our volunteers will come in, and based on their color level and training, they'll write a time they took the dog out that way we can make sure that every dog gets out," Valenta said.
Each dog gets some time outside thanks to a number of volunteers.
Valenta said that it's an important job and means a lot to each and every animal at the shelter.
"This is a tough job. It is physically tough, it is emotionally tough and it takes a very special crew to do what they do every single day," Valenta said.
The shelter is open for adoptions seven days a week. The shelter's hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
