New Braunfels City Council approves police and fire staffing increases as part of FY 2021-22 budget, report says

The New Braunfels City Council unanimously approved its Fiscal Year 2021-22 budget at its Sept. 27 meeting.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Staffing at the New Braunfels police and fire departments will increase over the next fiscal year, according to a report from Community Impact.

The New Braunfels City Council unanimously approved its Fiscal Year 2021-22 budget at its Sept. 27 meeting. The budget funds six firefighters, four police officers and one police sergeant.

The FY 2021-22 budget also funds a new internal mental health support program for both the City’s fire and police departments.

Public safety makes up 51.55% of the City’s general fund in the new budget, according to Community Impact. The general fund provides funding to public departments and services. Approximately $46.7 million was allocated to public safety.  

The city council’s proposed budget totaled $322.87 million. It was presented and approved for the first time on Sept. 9.

In the FY 2020-21 budget, $25,000 was allocated to the New Braunfels Fire Department’s medical director’s contract with E-Merge. The budget also included $16,500 for roof repairs for Fire Station 1.

The police department was allocated $11,750 for a new utility vehicle.

According to the adopted budget breakdown, public safety funding made up 54.7% of the FY 2020-21 budget.

The percent change in the population of New Braunfels was 56.4% from 2010 to 2019, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
