ACL Fest-goer Christopher White died of accidental drowning, medical examiner says

Christopher White, 25, was found dead in Lake Austin while attending the 2018 ACL Music Festival. Toxicology reports revealed traces of drugs in his system.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County Medical Examiner on Tuesday revealed the cause of death for a 2018 ACL Music Festival attendee whose body was discovered floating in Lake Austin -- accidental drowning.

According to toxicology reports, the medical examiner also said traces of MDMA and cocaine were found in his system.

Christopher White, 25, was identified by fingerprints after the autopsy. Officials said he traveled to Austin from Minnesota to attend the festival with friends. They rented a residence near the festival and returned home after attending the first day. After arriving home, friends reported they continued to drink alcohol when around 6 a.m. White, who appeared intoxicated, told them he was going inside.

Later that day when they noticed he was not home without his shoes, wallet and phone, officials said they decided to file a missing person report. Two days later, a passerby discovered his body floating in Lake Austin near a dock in close proximity to the rental property.

The medical examiner said the autopsy demonstrated no evidence of natural disease or injury, stating his body was moderately decomposed in a manner consistent with the time frame from which he was reported missing.

Toxicology testing on White's blood showed traces of ethanol, cocaine and one of its metabolites, cocaethylene (a compound formed in the body when both cocaine and ethanol are present), and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and its metabolite.
