AUSTIN, Texas — Adults in Austin can now get free whooping cough vaccines.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious disease that can be deadly for babies.

A student at Cedar Park Middle School was recently diagnosed with pertussis and doctors are continuing their efforts to promote vaccinations.

A grant from the Texas Medical Association means students at Dell Medical School can give out free shots on Saturdays in April and early May at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center. The events will be on April 13, 20, 27 and May 4.

Doctors highly recommend vaccinations for anyone who interacts with babies.
