Austin downtown MetroRail station approved

It's meant to eventually become a hub to connect MetroRail with other kinds of transportation.

AUSTIN, Texas — CapMetro's board approved a huge project on Monday for a new, permanent MetroRail station downtown worth almost $37 million.

It will be for its red line, which runs between Austin and Leander.

But here's the big picture - it's meant to eventually become a hub to connect MetroRail with other kinds of transportation, like bus service, motorized bikes and car2go rentals.

The station and pedestrian plaza will be on Fourth Street between Red River and Trinity streets, right by the convention center. There's already a temporary structure in that area now.

The new station should be done by 2021.
