REPORT: Casey Thompson to return to Texas

The freshman quarterback utilized his redshirt season in 2018.

AUSTIN, Texas — Casey Thompson will reportedly return to Texas.

Orangeblood's Anwar Richardson first reported late Friday night that the quarterback from Newcastle, Oklahoma, informed the Texas coaches he "intends to return to Texas after entering his name in the transfer portal."

KVUE reached out to Thompson's father, but have not been able to confirm Thompson's decision.

It was reported on Thursday that Thompson communicated his decision to return, but Thompson denied that report.

If true, Thompson will enter spring camp as a redshirt freshman backup to junior-to-be, Sam Ehlinger. True freshman quarterback Roschon Johnson from Port Neches-Groves is an early enrollee and will begin his career at Texas during the spring semester.

This week didn't look promising for Tom Herman's quarterback depth, but appears to have ended on a promising note.

Cameron Rising entered the transfer portal back in December with Thompson. Rising officially transferred to Utah on Thursday.

Veteran quarterback, Shane Buechele, who will graduate from UT in May, officially entered the NCAA's transfer portal on Thursday and is currently exploring the possibility of transferring. Buechele will have two years of eligibility remaining due to having played four or less games in 2018.

If Thompson does in fact return to Texas, the Longhorns' scholarship quarterback depth chart will look like this for spring camp:

Ehlinger, Buechele, if he doesn't transfer, 2B-redshirt freshman Casey Thompson and freshman Roschon Johnson.

Treymayne Prudhomme spent his freshman season as a walk-on quarterback. Sam Saxton, a freshman from St. Michael's Academy (Austin) may become an early enrollee quarterback as well.
