Central Texas Food Bank launches Feeding Futures School Pantry Program

The inaugural school pantry will offer food, education and benefits assistance to families in need of food assistance.

CREEDMOOR, Texas — The Central Texas Food Bank is launching a new way to provide meals to children in the Austin area.

On Wednesday, the food bank is launching its Feeding Futures School Pantry Program with its first location at Creedmoor Elementary School, located at 5604 FM 1327 near Del Valle. The food bank said the inaugural school pantry will offer food, education and benefits assistance to families in need of food assistance.

As KVUE has previously reported, Del Valle has a significant rate of food insecurity and is considered a food desert, meaning there are no big-name grocery stories or stores with a variety of foods in general. The Central Texas Food Bank said this new school pantry program will increase the access to nutritious food by providing fresh and perishable pantry staples after school, on the weekends and on holidays when school isn't in session.

If you are in need of food assistance but don't live in the Del Valle area, you can visit the Central Texas Food Bank's website to learn more about other pantry and distribution events.

The food bank has said Central Texas is "grappling with an unprecedented level of food insecurity," and it is currently serving half a million people each month. Because of this, the food bank is in need of both donations and volunteers.
