AUSTIN, Texas — Thousands of meals were delivered on Thanksgiving, as part of Operation Turkey.
At four locations in Central Texas, thousands of volunteers prepped meals that were delivered in the community for the homeless and those in need of meals.
Richard Bagdonas founded Operation Turkey. He started it in Austin and the event has since spread to more than 20 cities throughout the country.
"I fed a homeless man in a wheelchair on Sixth Street back in 2000. That one meal has turned into 50,000 volunteers feeding 15% of the homeless population across the country," Bagdonas said.
"Anybody, if you are going through anything, if it is a difficult time of the year for you we have guys in mind and everybody enjoy your day giving out some love," said Taylor Gomez, a volunteer at the event.
Once the cars were loaded up with the plates, they went out for delivery. The Delgado Family volunteered, delivering more than a dozen meals in South Austin.
Blanca Chavez and her family received some of the meals.
"Right now, I am struggling to pay my rent and bills something I really appreciate it," said Chavez.
