'Times are hard' | Hundreds of families attend back-to-school giveaway in East Austin

Kids could pick up backpacks, clothes, shoes and get a free haircut. There was also food, drinks and games.

AUSTIN, Texas — Hundreds of families in Central Texas got some extra help getting ready for the new school year on Saturday.

The You Are Our Future Foundation hosted its sixth annual back-to-school giveaway at Rosewood Park in East Austin.

“We’re here on the East Side, supporting our community on the East Side,” said Bryce Harris, one of the event organizers. “We really just want to give back to the people that need it most and just help the kids get to their school and get right with school.”

Kids could pick up backpacks, clothes, shoes and get a free haircut.

“Times are hard,” Lauren Wilkerson, the event’s director, said. “This year has been very hard economically on so many people. So they’re so happy to get shoes and clothes and backpacks and just have a fun day out in the sun.”

There were also food, drinks and games.

“I thought it was a good idea because kids getting ready to start back to school, people need help,” said Ronna Brown, who came with several family members. “So, I think it’s great. And then they’ve got the games and something for the kids to do. It’s a good event.”

Many kids in attendance were excited about the start of a new school year.

“Meeting friends and getting past third grade and going to fourth,” said Anthony Knox, when asked what he was looking forward to most about starting third grade.

Knox added, “Stay strong. Don’t give up.”

Organizers say people wishing to help can donate through You Are Our Future’s Instagram page. They can also contact Aisle 5, an Austin clothing store.
