SAN MARCOS, Texas — Editor's Note: The related video was published on Jan. 30, 2020, regarding parking issues in Austin.
A construction project in San Marcos has sparked some complaints about parking being limited at a nearby park.
Some San Marcos residents took to Facebook to voice complaints about the parking rearrangements at Rio Vista Park.
The complaints were the result of the construction of the Shared Use Pathway Project, which is funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the City of San Marcos.
The city was forced to realign parking spaces in order to protect an identified archaeological area southeast of the parking lot along with the Ranger Station, located along the San Marcos River.
12 parking spaces that were intended for the City of San Marcos Public Safety Department personnel were removed. The spots were in the path of several artifacts, including flint rocks that were discovered in the area.
The City said it would provide seven dedicated spots in an adjacent lot to make up for the removed spots.
Residents have expressed their frustration with the lack of space for parking, which includes 58 unrestricted spaces and 15 handicap-accessible spaces.
Additionally, the City said park patrons can use the unrestricted on-street parking nearby.
Construction is expected to be complete in early summer 2020.
