UPDATE -- The Kyle City Council voted four to three to deny the PUD ordinance for a truck stop development along I-35 and Yarrington Road.
KYLE -- It's expected to be one of the biggest truck stops in Central Texas if it gets built off I-35 and Yarrington Road in Kyle.
It will have parking to accommodate approximately 250 big rigs. For the city of Kyle that's a largely undeveloped part of our land, said city spokesperson Jerry Hendrix.
The area may be undeveloped in Kyle, but located directly across the street is a large subdivision full of San Marcos homeowners in Blanco Vista fighting the truck stop.
A truck stop does not belong in a community, said Blanco Vista homeowner Abby Hurst.
Will the city of Kyle share with the developer any blame for the cost of gas leaks, runoff and water contamination? asked a Kyle homeowner.
The road that runs alongside the proposed truck stop development is the diving line between the city of Kyle and the city of San Marcos, so homeowners feel like Kyle City Council members are not fairly representing surrounding communities.
The city hopes the new development will serve as an anchor for future growth.
City staff has been working with the developer for the past year to negotiate the planned unit development agreement, said Hendrix.
At Kyle s City Hall on Wednesday, some Kyle homeowners expressed support for the development.
It s off of 35 around nowhere. I don't know what the people of San Marcos are coming up here for, said one Kyle resident.
I don't complain to their city council when I have to deal with the traffic from the outlet mall on 35. I would ask them to recognize that we need growth too, said another homeowner.
However dozens of others from Kyle and San Marcos pleaded with the council to reconsider the project.
We're not in opposition to development at all. We want restaurants, we just don't want a truck stop.
There are so, so many reasons to deny this request for a PUD [Planned Unit Development] tonight that I can't even begin to speak to all of them.
Do you really want Kyle to be known as the home city for the largest truck stop in Texas?
Wednesday night the San Marcos City Council moved to pass a resolution to formally oppose the new truck stop.
Kyle City Council members will hear a second reading for rezoning the land for the truck stop planned unit development before the project can move forward.
