AUSTIN, Texas — One person was arrested after a reported threat at the Austin Community College's Highland campus that police now believe was a prank.
Austin Community College (ACC) said the reported threat happened at around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Students and employees reported that a person entered a room wearing a ski mask and making remarks that felt threatening.
ACC Police identified and questioned the person, who is not a student. No weapons were found, but officers learned that the person had violated a trespass order and arrested them for criminal trespass.
ACC sent a letter to students and employees letting them know there was no ongoing threat to campus.
"When I heard about what happened, my heart felt heavy. No one should face a situation like this – especially when they're on our campuses," Chancellor Russell Lowery-Hart said in the letter. "I am immensely proud of the students and employees who stepped up and reported this incident and our responding officers who were able to quickly de-escalate the situation and restore safety on campus."
ACC said an investigation into this incident remains open to determine if any additional charges may be filed.
The college encourages the community to remain vigilant on its campuses and report any suspicious activity to ACC Police dispatch at 512-223-1231.
