AUSTIN -- Fire investigators are looking for the person responsible for lighting an American flag on fire atop a police memorial plaque downtown Friday morning.
Investigators said it happened around 7:30 a.m. at Congress Avenue and Eighth Street at a monument which honors Leland Dale Anderson, an Austin police officer killed in the line of duty at that intersection.
A spokesperson for the Austin Fire Department said an American flag was placed over the memorial and set on fire.
The plaque was dedicated in November. Anderson was shot and killed by a suspect while serving a warrant in 1975. He left behind a wife and daughter.
