AUSTIN, Texas — Car thefts are on the rise at Austin's airport, according to data from the Austin Police Department (APD).
Data shows from 2018 to 2023, the airport saw 230 reports of stolen cars. One of the lots had five theft reports in 2018. In that same lot in 2023, 30 cars had been stolen.
A spokesperson for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport sent KVUE a statement, saying in part, "All parking lots and garages are equipped with CCTV cameras that monitor the operations 24/7. Airport and ABIA Parking staff assist Austin police with their investigations into crime at the airport."
The spokesperson said there is less than a 1% rate of theft, making the threat small. But it is something the airport said it is taking very seriously.
Airport officials say it is important you call APD or the airport communications line at 512-530-2242 if you have had something stolen from you.
