Man dies after apparent beating in north Austin

Police located 28-year-old Hector Diaz-Esparza unresponsive and bleeding in an alley in the 1700 block of Braker Ln. on Dec. 26.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating a homicide that occurred in north Austin on Dec. 26.

According to APD, officers received a call reporting that an unresponsive man, later identified as 28-year-old Hector Diaz-Esparza, was lying on the ground in an alley at 1708 Braker Ln. just after 5 a.m. Diaz-Esparza was bleeding and suffering from apparent injuries.

EMS attempted to revive Diaz-Esparza, but he was pronounced dead on the scene just after 6 a.m.

Through investigation, APD's Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Specialists determined that Diaz-Esparza had been attacked by suspects who fled the scene, and sustained injuries consistent with being beaten.

There is currently no information on potential suspects in this case.

The homicide is being investigated as Austin's 73rd of 2023.
