22-year-old arrested for DWI after pedestrians killed in North Austin crash

The Austin Police Department is asking community members to share any additional information they may have.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating the city's 57th deadly crash of the year after two people were killed last week in North Austin. 

APD said officers responded to a crash at roughly 2:26 a.m. on Aug. 24, in the 6500 block of North Lamar Boulevard. APD said the crash involved 22-year-old driver Edward Rodriguez and two pedestrians.

The pedestrians, identified as 50-year-old Johnny Joe Reyes and 21-year-old Luis Antonio Trevino Maldonado, died on scene. Rodriguez was arrested at the site of the crash for allegedly driving while intoxicated. 

This is Austin's 57th fatal crash of the year, resulting in 61 deaths. At this time last year, there had been 60 fatal crashes resulting in 63 deaths.
