APD: Death investigation underway in southeast Austin after teen boy's death

Police initially said the incident was a homicide, but later clarified it as a "death investigation."

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a teen boy died from a gunshot wound in the southeast area near South Creek on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a post, APD said the scene is located along Deer Run Drive and Blue Dawn Trail, which is near Langford Elementary School.

Police initially said the incident was a homicide, but later said it was a "death investigation," not a homicide. Details are limited at this time. APD canceled a media briefing on the investigation after announcing it was not a homicide.

According to KVUE's media partners at the Austin American-Statesman, a boy died from a gunshot wound following an altercation. Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed the boy was a teenager.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots at 12:35 p.m., the Statesman reported. After arriving on the scene, they found the boy with a gunshot wound. The boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 1:31 p.m.

Police told the Statesman the gunshot was heard after an altercation between the boy and a girl, both juveniles. The girl was reportedly unharmed and stayed on the scene.

There is no active threat to the community.
