Austin police ask for help identifying suspect in RIO Nightclub burglary

Police believes this burglary may be related to a series of similar downtown area burglaries that have been happening since late November.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is asking for the public's help identifying a suspect in a burglary that occurred at the RIO Nightclub on Feb. 11.

APD said on Feb. 11 at approximately 4:45 a.m., a dark gray, newer model Jeep Renegade pulled up to the Rio Nightclub at 601 Rio Grande St.

An unknown person got out of the Jeep, went into the nightclub, stole a safe with a large amount of cash inside, put it in the Jeep and left. They were in and out in a couple of minutes, according to APD.

The exact amount of cash stolen is unknown at this time.

APD believes this burglary may be related to a series of similar downtown area burglaries that have been happening since late November. In all of those cases, safes containing cash were stolen from businesses. APD said since November, at least 10 of these burglaries have occurred.

APD said the RIO burglary may or may not be connected to the other burglaries, but they are similar.

APD is asking for the public's help identifying the RIO burglary suspect, who can be seen in the surveillance video below. He is described as a black man, between approximately 20 and 30 years old, with a thin to average build. In the video, he is completely covered from head-to-toe, but is wearing a pair of distinctive, green-colored shoes.

At least one other person was also involved in the RIO burglary: the driver of the Jeep Renegade.
