Police believe road rage is behind homicide near I-35 and Rundberg Lane

APD said it received a call of a car crash at around 6 p.m. but officers noticed the person's injuries weren't consistent with those seen in a car crash.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) believes road rage was behind a homicide that occurred on Saturday night in North Austin.

Officials with APD said the department received a call of a car crash around 6 p.m. near the Interstate 35 Frontage Road and Rundberg Lane, at exit 240, after a vehicle hit a guardrail.

According to APD, the person in the vehicle was suffering from injuries "not consistent" with injuries typically sustained in a car crash. The person, identified as 46-year-old Teresa Gandy Ferguson, died on the scene.

In an update on Tuesday, Oct. 3, APD said they believed Ferguson was going south on I-35 and took exit 240 as part of her normal commute home. At some point, she was involved in a minor crash and pulled over to exchange information with the other driver.

Police said Ferguson was on the phone with a friend when the call was terminated. Shortly after, 911 got an automated call from Apple saying a crash had happened, and officers responded to the scene. They found Ferguson unresponsive with a gunshot wound.

No description has been provided of a suspect, but police said a gray four-door sedan was involved. Ferguson was driving a black Ford Mustang.

APD is asking witnesses to come forward, including anyone who may have video footage of the incident. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at 512-794-TIPS or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for any information that leads to an arrest.
