Suspect killed by law enforcement following chase in southwest Austin

Authorities said it remains unclear who shot the suspect to death.

AUSTIN, Texas — A suspect is dead after multiple members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force opened fire while attempting to serve a warrant, sources told KVUE.

The incident began just before 11 a.m. when the Austin Police Department (APD) called for help near the area of West William Cannon and Vega Avenue.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed the task force attempted to serve a warrant for a man at a complex near the Lantana Ridge Apartments. It is unclear at this time what the warrant was for.

DPS said the man got into a Honda Accord and hit an officer's car before he continued to West William Cannon. He then got out of his car and confronted officers with a weapon, which led to him being shot by law enforcement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, according to DPS. The Texas Rangers have now taken over the ongoing investigation.

Anita Kony works at the Smith & Nephews just down the road from the shooting and said there isn't usually crime in the area, so she was surprised to see it happen.

“The traffic being redirected ... This is sort of something that I have not seen in the six years that I have been working here,” Kony said.
